Science 8-7 and 8-1: We did the lab: 11.5, curved mirrors today.  There was plenty of time to do all the observations and to start answering the analysis questions.  They will need to do a bit of research for the analysis questions.  The formal lab write up is due on December 9

Math 8-1: I showed the test for the third time today, then we marked the pre-test worksheets to see what we could get help on, or help us understand for the test on Friday.  Then I gave them the rest of the block for a work block to study for math or finish formal lab write ups.

Math 8-7: Problem solving questions with division and multiplication fractions.  In pairs, they had to complete 5 questions, show their work, and sentence answer.  I also showed them the unit test that will be on Friday.

Math 8-1: Review worksheets were handed out today that should be able to help with the test.  I also showed the test for a second time today.  We also looked at the red/green light post assessment tool to help us with studying for our test.

Science 8-7 and 8-1: Three journal entries are due for Friday.  Interesting controversial topic question: Is cloning immoral?  And, we set up for lab 11.5, curved mirrors, which we will do in class on Thursday, blocks 1 and 2

Science 8-7 and 8-1: Three journal entries for this week please, these are due for Friday.  We then completed the demo and the procedure of the lab, 11.1 Reflecting Light off a Plane Mirror.  This will be performed on Thursday November 25 blocks 1 for 8-7 and block 2 for 8-1.  It can be found on the google classroom.  And, don’t forget, last week’s lab is due this THURSDAY.

Science 8-7 and 8-1: We completed the lab 10.2, Watching light travel.  The formal write up will be due on the 25th, but I suggest having it in earlier than this.  I am looking forward to reading the independent conclusions and connections. Don’t forget, three journal entries are due for tomorrow.

Math 8-7: 3.6 Procedural method on how to divide fractions.  Two methods: 1. multiply the reciprocal of the Divisor, and 2. Common denominator method Pages 139-140 #8, 9, 11, 12, 15 and try 17

Math 8-1: A review of 3.6, this time using the common denominator method to demonstrate abstractly with the number line.

Students attended an adapted Remembrance Day Assembly in our classrooms today at 10:30 am.  Please ask your student about it.  It was very well done and it included some students from both 8-7 and 8-1.

For the Week of November 1-5 (Happy Birthday Abby)

My apologies, I have been away for a while at meetings, a dentist appointment, and then a flu shot (of which I had some gross side effects this year!).  Anyhow, we are back on track now! I have been able to keep the same TTOC in for me, Mr. Kevin Smyth, a retired ROMS and STELLY’s Math, Science and PE teacher, so the students were in very good hands.

Math 8-1: We did a quick review of 3.1, 3.2, and 3.3 so that students will be ready for the unit test and the quiz.  I assigned a homework package, 3.3 as the priority to complete in preparation for the quiz on Friday.

Science 8-7 and 8-1:  We got a tad caught up with everything while I was away.  Journals: 3 entries are due for this week, Friday.  Some of the topics include a controversial topic (animal testing should be illegal?), representing a graph with years of post secondary education and salary, opinion (do pets relieve depression), and there is one with prefixes, which is larger/greater.  Worksheets 3.2 from the textbook are also due for the inbox.  These were assigned last week.  Then we completed the first part of WAVE notes, including definitions and types, which also include a cut and paste activity for our notebooks.  Students should expect a quiz soon.  As well, the pendulum lab will be due for tomorrow.

Science 8-1: I returned their Science Quizzes today, we went over it, then we looked at the second section, 3.2, using models to explain the Electromagnetic spectrum.  These worksheets will be due in a week.

Math 8-7 and 8-1: Unit Test on adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers.  There were a variety of different type of questions to assess more than just procedural knowledge.  It included word problems, explanations, vocabulary, and understanding of terms.  There were 5 people missing from both classes, therefore, tests will NOT be returned UNTIL the others have finished it.

Science 8-7 and 8-1: Journal entries, two for this week due Thursday.  As well, textbook worksheets 3.1 will be due on Thursdsay for 8-7, Monday for 8-1.  Electromagnetic Radiation Station Lab will be due on Thursday.  And, expect an electromagnetic radiation quiz soon.

Science 8-7: In addition to the above, 8-7 received some textbook worksheets again, on the Electromagnetic Spectrum.  These worksheets are due by October 21st, although some finished it in class already.

Math 8-7: Subtracting Fractions using symbols (5.5).  The Common Denominator method.  Page 197-198 From the Math Makes Sense Textbook 7, #2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and try 9

Science 8-7 and 8-1: Today we completed the spaghetti tower lab in class.  Most students were able to successfully complete the lab in class and create a tower at least 10 cm in height! There is a formal lab write up due.  It will be due, submitted into the google classroom for October 14th.  They will have some time after the quiz tomorrow to complete the lab.

They must write out proceduraly the step by step on how they will create their tower to balance a marshmallow.  This is on the SCIENCE google classroom.

Science 8-7 and 8-1: New October Journals were handed out today (some got it on Friday).  For this week please complete three journal entries.  ALSO, we learned how to create formal lab report using the STEM Spaghetti Tower challenge.  Please take a look at the google classroom. There were quite a few students away from 8-1 today, so it would be helpful for those students to please come see me (and with a device)!

Math 8-1: Because there were so many students away, I did not start subtracting fractions.  I handed back the quizzes from Friday and then we worked together to do some logic and problem solving mind benders.  Then I assigned, from the Math Makes Sense 7 textbook, the mid unit review, all questions, due tomorrow.  Most worked on it in class.  The mind benders attempted are due on Friday.  Homework, #1-8. due tomorrow.
